One thing I would say about this movie is that the writer and the director were very ambitious with this story. Ambitious but not very clear. This movie was meant to show the domino effect of an action; that is, what Newton described in his third law of motion as “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction“.
The story, although titled Chimkamso as well as giving a very misleading synopsis which read:
A mischievous school girl is sent to the city to live with her cousin after being expelled from school, however life there is more brutal than she ever imagined.
the actual content was a lot bigger than her. It is a story about how the actions of two men led to terrible ramifications on their offspring and how that trickled down to Chimkamso (Lydia Eires).
The first man is Chimkamso’s fatherย Ichie Iwuji (Amaechi Muonagor). On first seeing this man you will think he was just a lecherous fellow until the story progresses you’d realise he had done more evil which happens to be the reason for all the pain Chimkamso suffers as well as her brother and mother.
The second man is Daniel (Mike Ezuruonye) whose past had led to his child suffering constantly in the hands of his mother, Cindy (Chiamaka Nwokeukwu).ย In addition, Daniel himself had been unlucky in love as well due to his past.
Now, all these people meet at varying circumstances which shapes their future. However, that future is quite shaky and not clear. These, I will lay for you; firstly, Chimkamso’s boyfriend Nnamdi (Rex Nosa), what was he really about? He kept on appearing and disappearing with no real story but with random scenes about him only for him to serve a real purpose towards the end of the movie.
Secondly, Chimkamso’s boss raping her – that shit came from left field. We didn’t even know why the dude got drunk. All we know was that he got drunk, raped and impregnated her.
Thirdly, why was Cynthia (Ruth Kadiri) not so loving for a cousin even before Chimkamso’s repudiation to being turned into prostitute by her. There was this latent hatred before she found a visible reason to fully hate her and it would have been nice to explore that.
Lastly, the end kind of left us hanging. What were we supposed to think? She married her boss or she followed her mother’s wish and married Nnamdi? It was neither here nor there especially since she came visiting with an SUV which we know didn’t come from her salary but from her boss.
Do you agree with me?
