Family Album

My verdict: 4 out of 5

2014 | Drama | 146minutes 53secs | Watch here

This is one movie from Pascal Amanfo where he is absent as a cast member and I must say it came out beautifully well. This movie just focused on one dayโ€ฆ the wedding day which was quite the eventful day. So without further ado, letโ€™s get it on.

It is the day of his sisterโ€™s wedding, and an eclectic Greg introduces us to his family, one filled with colorful personalities. Just a few hours after the wedding, the walls of what seems like a fun loving family comes crashing down from one dramatic revelation to the other.

Gregโ€™s family was a Pandora’s box. We are first introduced to his family as this loving unit where everybody is well aware of their place in it and takes pride is who or what they are. However, the more we get into the movie, the more we start to realise that there is so much more about them that meets the eye.

I really really liked this movie. In fact I am in love with it because they got it right. The production, sound, story, costume, directionโ€ฆ were near perfect. I especially loved the costumes and the set design for the reception. It did indeed feel like a real wedding which was the beauty of this movie. Even the house they used had so many rooms and inner chambers that it was plausible for what we saw to happen. I will say though that the plot does take a while to come together because so much time was spent on parts that could have been scraped: like the time that Greg (Majid Michel) was busy perambulating as well as the time that was spent on Gregโ€™s wedding speech. It was neither important nor heartfelt. Even the scene where he was dressing up was not needed. That was just Pascal giving us his usual Majid overload. Nevertheless, when the plot begins to take shape, it does stay on course till the very end.

Another thing I liked about the movie was the dialogue. It was very chitchatty and also quick witted. The acting was good all round but the actor who stood out was Jose Tolbert. He was very good at being the busted two timing fiancรฉ. He was very natural. Conversely though, there was something I found rather disturbing in this movie. When Regina (Kalsume Sinare) and Opera (Christabel Ekeh) fainted, instead of Greg and Lucas (Kofi Adjorlolo) toโ€ฆ you know, perform some CPR, fan them, sprinkle water on their faces or squeeze an onion close to their nostrils; they gave these women water to drink.

Hmmโ€ฆ who gives water to an unconscious person to drink? They are unconscious, they canโ€™t drink water. For all we know, their mouths are closed shut. So how does the water drinking thing work, to wake up an unconscious person, when they are not even aware that there is liquid inside their mouth waiting to be ingested?

This movie is very enjoyable and ends on a very realistic note. To which I say well done to the crew. You guys did great with this one.
