Why was Jane so unfortunate? I know that life can be hard but damn, she was just too unlucky.
Hey there, before we get started on the review I will need you to do these three things for me: please subscribe to our blog, like this post and pass it on to your friends.
The movie we’re reviewing today is Quagmire. So Let’s get into it, shall we?
The Plot
Quagmire is a story about a married couple, Kolade and Foyekemi who have been married for five years struggling with childlessness.
The Characters
Kunle Remi as Kolade, Foyekemi’s husband who worships the ground she walks on.
Matilda Obaseki as Foyekemi, Kolade’s wife who feels she is responsible for their childlessness.
Dior Adiele as Jane, the exotic dancer Foyekemi hires to spice up her marriage.
Bidoun Stephen as Kolade’s smothering mother. She believes that Foyekemi has a spirit husband that is preventing her from getting pregnant.
Nkechi Blessing as Lola, Foyekemi’s best friend who is the brain behind Foyekemi’s decision to hire an exotic dancer.
Karen Ajimobi as Alero, Jane’s uncouth and opportunistic friend and roommate.
Vicky Nwogu as the Doctor.
The Theme of the Movie
I have been trying to think of the overriding theme of this movie but I have been coming up dry. Itโs like I know it but at the same time, I donโt. So what I will do will be to explain the messages I got from the movie in bullet points. Pardon me if it comes off a little bit disorganised.
Quagmire explored the following themes:
- Love โ it was very evident that Kolade and Foyekemi loved each other. I mean, dude practically said it every five minutes. He also barred his mother from visiting his home because of the unhealthy pressure and insults she kept mounting on Foyekemi. Speaking of Foyekemi, we saw her loving side too when in a bid to save her marriage hired an exotic dancer to spice things up. We also see how she treated Jane when she realised that Jane was a pure soul who had no intentions of taking her place.
- Parenthood โ this movie explored surrogacy and adoption. Jane gets pregnant for Kolade but is very unhappy because she had just gotten a scholarship to a fashion school in Milan. Initially, she planned to get an abortion because her school starts in two months but she was convinced by Kolade to keep the baby. Kolade convinced her to carry the pregnancy to full term, deliver it and sign off all rights to them (he and Foyekemi). Foyekemi rejected the idea because she wanted to be the biological mother of her children. I am guessing she probably wanted to prove to herself that she could still bear children despite having had an abortion in the past. However, the more time she spent with Jane, the more she loved her and the more connected she felt with the baby.
The Flaws
- It was mostly boring โ despite the main characters having a conflict, there were no catalytic moments nor climax. The movie wasnโt building up to anything. It just stayed flat throughout.
- The sound wasnโt the best.
- The end was a cop-out โ I think the movie should have started from where Jane got pregnant and then explore surrogacy in detail.
The Positives
- The acting was good โ Special shout out to Karen Ajimobi, Lord knows I wanted to reach in and slap her. Kunle Remi as well, dude had me thinking that he was literally in love with Matilda. Well done.
My verdict
I give this movie a 2 out of 5. I struggled to finish this movie. It was not entertaining at all.
