I run this blog alone, and it can get tiring trying to juggle my day job and this hobby of writing reviews. So, to reduce the stress, I took a much-needed week-long break, and I’m back with a new approach, which you’ll experience in this post.
This Sunday, I watched a couple of Nollywood movies: “The Masseuse,” “US Again,” and “BADBOYS and Bridesmaids,” and I have some thoughts. So, let’s dive in, shall we?
THE MASSEUSE
Plot:
Caleb is a recluse who values his peace of mind. This tranquility is disrupted by his newest neighbor, Isi, who is always embroiled in one trouble or another. If she’s not arguing with the gateman, she’s involved in street fights with the neighbor’s troublemakers. However, Isi’s friend and housemate, Angel, changes the dynamics. She is drawn to Caleb, and he to her, and they form a friendship that blossoms into a relationship. When Caleb asks Angel to reveal her true self, she falsely claims to be a student and a masseuse. In reality, Angel is a sugar baby/escort, a fact Caleb discovers when he introduces her to his friend, Femi, who reveals her true nature. Caleb and Femi set her up, and she falls for it. Caleb confronts her and ends their relationship. However, Angel is pregnant, claiming that the child is Caleb’s. He supports her during the pregnancy, provides financial assistance to start a business, and helps her secure her own apartment after the baby is born. Despite this, he doesn’t reconcile with her because of her deception.
What I liked:
The ending. This movie was a hot mess throughout, and its purpose wasn’t clear until the end when I realized it wasn’t so bad after all.
What I didn’t like:
- The storytelling that led to Caleb falling for Angel was chaotic and confusing.
- The movie was not entertaining. There wasnโt much of a story to work with.
Rating:
I give this movie โญโญ out of 10 stars. My reason is that it emphasises the importance of trust in a romantic relationship, but the movie was overall a drag and not entertaining.
US AGAIN
Plot:
Nada and Jarvin are drawn to each other from the moment they meet. They feel a strong connection even before exchanging words. Despite Tari’s persistent efforts to date Nada for two years, she doesn’t reciprocate his feelings and focuses her attention on Jarvin. Ella reminds her that Jarvin is only in the country temporarily, and out of fear of being used, Nada reluctantly agrees to be Tari’s girlfriend. Jarvin and Nada both suffer panic attacks upon learning about their relationship. Eventually, Nada rejects Tari, and she and Jarvin begin dating. While out, a mysterious man with dreadlocks approaches them, referring to them as Atinuke and Gbolahan, and shares the story of their past lives. He warns them of impending danger before disappearing.
Upon returning, Jarvin proposes, and Ella receives a poisoned pizza gift. It’s revealed that Tari was responsible.
What I liked:
- The premise of a love story spanning two lifetimes was clever.
- The character of Tari was well-developed.
What I didnโt like:
- The execution of the premise was such a fail and a snooze. They spent so much time on vibes rather than action. A movie is supposed to have plot points that keep you engaged, this one failed for me.
- The period costumes. You had a couple in 1993 dressed like they were straight out of the ’70s.
- Ella and Nonsoโs romance was a from where to where situation. Iโm like “how did this grow?” Give me details, give me subplots, give me a timeline.
- Dera and Lekanโs subplot was giving โeyesโ. No nuance, just eyes and reflections.
Rating:
I give this movie โญโญ out of 10 stars. It didn’t resonate with me.
BADBOYS AND BRIDESMAIDS
Plot:
Jaiye and Jola are getting married, but a problem arises. Jaiye wants to consummate their relationship, while Jola is committed to remaining a virgin due to a pact with her friendsโUche, Temi, and Vickyโuntil marriage. After pressuring Jola, she confesses her reason. Jaiye tells his friendsโEfosa, Tokunbo, and Olisaemekaโabout the pact, and they bet to determine if the girls are truly virgins. Efosa is paired with Uche, Olisa with Temi, and Tokunbo with Vicky. The boys initially struggle but eventually make progress. However, when Jola discovers their scheme, she is shocked to find out that she’s the only one who kept the pact. The couples reconcile.
What I liked:
- I appreciated that it was an ensemble story that felt like an ensemble storyโฆ Well, kind of for the most part.
- It was a fun plot.
- The film looked pretty. You can tell they spent guap or if not much, they spent the little they had judiciously.
- The characters were different and interesting – Efosa was such a vibe, and I loved him.
What I didn’t like:
- Tokunbo’s random ex-girlfriend showing up and giving 0.000% to the overall plot.
- The movie not doing much in terms of storytelling. The guys were meant to carry out schemes to get the girls but the only two people putting in the work were Efosa and Olisaemeka. All Jaiye did was pressure Jola while Tokunbo roamed around looking and acting weird. maybe that was his trait but nah.
- The climax and resolution were so dull and rushed. I expected more drama and over-the-top resolutions.
Rating:
I give this movie โญโญโญโญโญ out of 10 stars. It was an enjoyable watch and had good production value.
So, that concludes my Sunday watch and my new diary-like format. If you liked this style, please let me know. If you didn’t, also share your feedback. For those who choose not to comment, I’ll continue with this format until instructed otherwise.
Until tomorrow, bye! ๐
