It’s 12:10 AM, essentially midnight, and I’m here to give you my latest review. Hi, it’s Myopic Concaves, and today we’re diving into the Nigerian movie, “April’s Miracle,” from Omoni Oboli’s channel. This film features Adeoluwa Okusaga, also known as Saga from Big Brother Naija, as Obi, Detola Jones as Kesiena April (the titular character), and Paul Nnadiekwe as Daniel.
Before we continue:
and for those of you who like my voice, here is an audio of me recounting the movie. Trust me you will laugh because my filter was broken for this particular one.
love on borrowed time: a nigerian movie recap of APRIL'S MIRACLE – Myopic Concaves
Intro to Daniel and Kesiena
Kesiena and Daniel are siblings, living together, with Kesiena leading quite the promiscuous life. The movie kicks off with Kesiena entertaining a different man each night, much to Daniel’s quiet disapproval. Daniel, despite his discomfort, understands her reasons, which are gradually revealed throughout the film.
Daniel’s best friend, Obi, moves in with them after his grandmother’s death. On Obi’s first night, Kesiena brings home yet another random man, making for an awkward introduction. Despite this, Obi and Kesiena eventually form a friendship, rekindling childhood crushes they had on each other. However, just as their relationship starts to deepen, Kesiena pulls away, coughing blood and displaying other troubling symptoms.
April’s health issues
Kesiena’s health issues turn out to be a relapse of leukemia, a fact she initially hides from Obi. Her refusal to let Obi know her condition strains their budding relationship. Obi remains in the dark even as Kesienaโs health deteriorates, and she continues her reckless behavior. Daniel urges Kesiena to be honest with Obi, but she fears losing the love in his eyes, replaced by pity.
In a twist, Kesiena discovers she is pregnant. Despite the doctor’s advice to terminate the pregnancy to undergo life-saving treatment, she chooses to keep the baby, further complicating her situation. Kesienaโs health continues to decline, leading to a premature delivery and her eventual death. Obi learns about the pregnancy only after Kesiena’s demise, leaving him heartbroken.
The movie concludes with a time jump, showing Obi and Kesiena’s daughter playing on a beach, symbolizing life moving forward despite the tragic loss.
My Thoughts
“April’s Miracle” attempts to tackle themes of love, loss, and the inevitability of mortality. While not my favourite of Omoni Oboli’s productions, it does offer a poignant look at how people deal with imminent death. The film borrows heavily from similar narratives, and while it didnโt completely capture me emotionally, it was a decent watch.
