I recently endured…I mean, watched a Nollywood movie called LOVE, CAMERA, ACTION.
I cringed so hard, I thought my face would crack. But then, some moments made me laugh out loud too. All of which we will discuss here.
The Plot: A Tale as Old as Time (Kinda)
LOVE CAMERA ACTION was not a rom-com, it was an attempt at romance and the romance was:
A woman called Kaine (Chinonso Arubayi) quits her day job to pursue acting at the ripe young age of 32.
Her decision to pursue acting leads her to acting school where she meets and befriends a very young man named Ekom (Adeoluwa Okusaga).
Their friendship blossoms into a relationship which then suffers some major setbacks because of the bad advice Kaine took from her friends Emy (Osereme Inegbenebor) and Ifeoma (Jumai Chioma Umahi).
Also, Kaine’s ex, Ejiro (Atewe Raphael Chux) refuses to leave the picture.
Characters: More Flat Than A Pancake
The characters were about as deep as a puddle. Our leading lady, Kaine, was your typical good girl who wasn’t really interesting. She was just a lucky woman who moved from dating a douchebag to being loved by a prince charming.
As for Ekom, her love interest. That one was the definition of bland. All he gave was scrunched facial expressions and cringe vibes.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Let’s talk about that one scene with the cake, the towel, Ekom and Ejiro (1:24:23).
I chuckled like a fat baby.
But
That was the highlight. The rest of the movie was dull. The romance was not romancing and the line delivery was so cringeworthy. I suspect that they didn’t have enough time to rehearse and use the chemistry the leads had.
The off-screen of it all
Kaine travelled to Cape Verde: off-screen.
She did a reality show: off-screen.
She lied to Ekom: Off-screen.
Ejiro followed her into a room to tell her something: off-screen.
She quit her job: off-screen.
All they did was tell us. We were not shown jack shit.
The Verdict: Burnt and Bitter
Would I recommend LOVE, CAMERA, ACTION? Only if you just want to see two fine people kiss each other and have a cringe romance.
So many important moments and milestones happened off-screen, it made for a very disappointing watch.
