Let’s do a little recap of the Last Straw

Morenike is married to Laolu and they are a happy couple but her mother, Regina resents Laolu. 

Regina never fails to insult Laolu and belittle him. 

She is always quick to call him broke because he isn’t as wealthy as they are. 

Morenike suffers a leg injury from a car accident and when Regina visits, she finds Morenike on the floor.

Laolu wasn’t at home because he went out to buy groceries. 

When he returns, however, Regina insults him so much that Laolu can’t hold his tongue anymore. 

Regina leaves and Laolu moves out of the house as well. 

Lalou moves in with his friend, Ugo. 

The time he and Morenike spend apart gives her clarity and for the first time, she stands up to her mother. 

Her sudden change of character forces Regina to tell her what really happened between her and Morenike’s father. 

A quick one on Morenike’s father

Regina met him while she was an undergrad student. 

He was a bartender at one of the school bars. 

They clicked and eventually got married when she was pregnant with Morenike.

After they got married, Morenike’s father became a monster. 

He failed at every business venture and eventually left Regina for his side family. 

He also stole money from Regina and her father. 

The news of his betrayal led to the death of Regina’s father. 

He died of a heart attack. 

When Regina finally summoned the courage to go to his new home to confront him. 

She found out he had passed away. 

Regina never got closure and because of that, Laolu became her punching bag.

After coming clean to Morenike, Regina advises Morenike to go back to get her husband.

Morenike does and she returns with Laolu. 

Regina accepts Laolu and in the end, Laolu gets a potential investor for his and Ugo’s app. 

I said I cried

The part where Morenike goes to Ugo’s house to meet Laolu was so emotional for me. I got choked up.

My eyes were itchy but no tears, no tears came down. 

I wished (My Thoughts on the Story)

They gave us a fuller story with the time they had. So much time was spent on Regina being a 

To Laolu. I wished we got that backstory because the story was more of hers than Morenike’s.

We were watching the manifestations of her unresolved trauma. It would have been nice to see how she came to be. I feel that the backstory would have elevated the movie.
