Match Mingle was easy to predict but there was a twist I didn’t see coming.
A Little Background Info
Tobi and Sifon are colleagues at Aqua Tech. They are building a dating app for middle-aged people called Match Mingle. Both Tobi and Sifon despise each other. He seems to be very critical of her because she is always late for everything.
Ukeme
Sifon’s mother, Ukeme has a friend who just remarried after her husband died three years ago. Ukeme is very critical of her friend because three years is too short of a time to mourn the love of one’s life.
Sifon tells Ukeme to also put herself out there to find love. It’s been six years since Sifon’s dad died but Ukeme refuses. She wants to mourn Sifon’s father until her last breath.
My first guess
When I saw the above scene, I was like
“hmm, Match Mingle is going to help Ukeme get a man.”
That was until I found the next bit of information.
Kunle
Kunle is Tobi’s father. He is divorced from Tobi’s mother but he isn’t over her. Tobi’s mother initiated the divorce and Kunle has been devastated ever since.
Because of the divorce, Kunle has turned into a jobless drunk who only goes out to buy more alcohol to drink.
My second guess
Kunle and Ukeme are going to end up together. They would sign up on Match Mingle and fall in love. This is going to be an Ememgini My Love type of story.
However, I was forced to change my mind again because:
The Parents were not interested
Kunle was lost in his self-pity while Ukeme believed dating again was tantamount to cheating on her late husband.
So, I made my final guess.
My final guess
Tobi and Sifon are going to catfish each other using their parents’ identities.
Tobi would be his dad.
Sifon would be her mum.
And I was right
They both signed up as their parents and tried to convince their parents to use the profiles they set up but neither of them (i.e. Kunle and Ukeme) agreed.
They both said no.
Tobi and Sifon matched on Match Mingle as Kunle and Ukeme. They proceeded to catfish each other and become fond of each other online.
However, they hated each other offline and interestingly enough there is a backstory to that hatred.
Precious the big mouth
Tobi and Sifon have a colleague called Precious who loves to yap. One day after the bickering extravaganza between Tobi and Sifon; Ema another colleague tries to understand the reason behind the animosity.
Precious reveals that Tobi and Sifon used to really like each other and were about to date until something happened and she never forgave him.
When Ema asks Sifon, she brushes the question aside.
Kunle gets sober
Tired of his father’s constant drinking, Tobi lashes out at Kunle. After that night, Kunle stops drinking and agrees to try out the dating app.
I was sceptical at this point
My thought was that Kunle wanted to swap one addiction (alcohol) for another (sex).
Anyway, his choice to start dating forces Tobi to come clean.
Tobi confesses
That he has been pretending to be Kunle on Match Mingle to get Kunle a girlfriend. He also shows Kunle, Ukeme’s picture and says she is a nice lady.
Kunle is impressed with Ukeme’s looks and agrees to meet up with her.
Speaking of meetups, Mariano (Sifon and Tobi’s boss) demands that their test subjects meet, and see if they like each other.
This new development also forces Sifon to come clean.
Sifon confesses
To Ukeme she has been chatting with an older gentleman on Ukeme’s behalf. Ukeme is furious and scolds Sifon. She also demands that Sifon delete the profile.
Sifon doesn’t at first but after reconciling with Ukeme and talking with a colleague, she realises the legal implications of her actions and deletes the profile.
Deleting the profile upsets Tobi but there is an upside to it…
Tobi finds out that Ukeme is Sifon’s mother
At first, he thought he had fallen in love with Ukeme BUT later on, he realised that it was Sifon he was talking to all along.
And then the twist
The reason for their hostility towards each other was because Tobi stood Sifon up and when she tried to find out why, he was rude towards her.
Tobi later apologised and explained that it was because his mother served his father divorce papers that day.
Seeing his father become a shell of himself made him hate love because love makes a man vulnerable.
All is resolved
After telling each other how much they “hate” each other in a 10 Things I Hate About You style, they finally admit they still love each other and they go on a date.
THE END.
My Thoughts
I liked this movie. It has been a while since I have liked anything from Omoni Oboli. This is a welcome surprise.
Are you going to watch this?
