The movie starts with Davidโs girlfriend, Salewa breaking up with him. She says he is a good guy but her parents donโt want her to marry him.
Fast forward to the present, I think
David is trying to collect the last piece of red velvet cake at a party – Sophiaโs birthday party – and her friend, Didi smacks his hand.
She collects the cake and eats it.
Tega, Sophiaโs boyfriend and Davidโs friend approaches David to speak to him. David is mildly upset about what Didi did.
Tega takes David to meet the girls and an introduction is done. Sophia asks the singles to go have a chat and that is where the movie beginsโฆ
David and Didi
How David went from โShe is rudeโ to flirty looks in a quarter of a second was beyond me.
Did I miss a scene showing his affinity for rudeness?
Oh, he didnโt forget, he slid the โyou slapped my handโ thing while flirting with her.
I guess he was feeling her and didnโt want to ruin it with his anger.
The two of them make fun of Sophia and Tega for trying to matchmake them. Didi calls them cringe.
She also says that not everyone is lucky with love and David gives her bedroom eyes and asks:
What about you? Have you been lucky with love?
For a guy who doesn’t want to be matchmade, you sure are enjoying the matchmaking.
David is an artist. He has a job and they show him working on his painting which is good.
BUT!
The remaining three people ain’t got no job but they are living the life.
Didi is interested in David but she is playing it cool. Sophia calls her out on it, saying that she saw the looks David and Didi were giving each other.
This whole interaction was a vibe. The friends are very funny together.
I agree that Sophia and Tega are cringe. I know you are in love but why do you have to be like this
All the time. Ah ah… allow the singles to breathe.
David and Didi finally decided to go on a date… as friends.
The Ds are Dating
David was 20 minutes late for their date.
She’s better than me. I would have ordered my dinner already and if he was any later, he wouldn’t have met me.
They go out as friends and their date is not a montage. We actually hear them have a proper conversation.
Well done to whoever wrote this movie. I appreciate your service.
Didi is a product designer but we never see her work.
It just hit me now, they are both artists. Smart matchmaking by their friends.
And they both have cheeky banter.
After their dinner, David invites Didi over for lunch which she agrees to.
However, this is the time she shows up for “lunch”.
I think I speak for everyone when I say she is there for supper and a little something-something after that.
Okay, they addressed why she came late for the lunch. She was late because of Lagos traffic but then…
the darkness look like a 9pm type of darkness.
Did a herd of elephants die on the road or does David live on the ends of the earth?
David’s backstory
David was dumped by Salewa because he has sickle cell.
I like how they took their time to reveal this information. Who are you writer? I am loving your work.
David was also adopted.
Writer! I love you right now. The way you slowly peeled off the layers was brilliant.
The “lunch” date (supper!) was actually cute. They were taking their time to build the relationship. Also, the actors look like they are feeling each other and want to be together.
That is ACTING!
From Friends to Lovers
David and Didi go on another date but we don’t see it. They tell us about it.
The way she told him about her genotype results was sexy. She said it, kissed him and then said;
I need you to ask me out on a proper date and not as friends.
Oshey!!!!
Sidenote: One thing I am not loving with this movie is the lack of a B-plot. I would have loved a small side plot focused on Sophia and Tega’s relationship.
Meeting the ‘rents
Didi meets David’s mother, Mrs Ayodele and his sister, Dami. Mrs Ayodele then does the funniest thing.
She pretends to be cold and asks David to go get her shawl from the car. She also tells Dami to follow David to the car. Mrs Ayodele does it to get some alone time with Didi.
I like his mother.
David meets Didi’s mother, Mrs Oche and she is quite unpleasant.
Unfortunately, he suffers a crisis and Didi is forced to come out clean to her mother that David has sickle cell. Didi also maintains that David is healthy and his mother replies with:
Hmm, there must be stupid flashing across my forehead
When she said that, I fell down laughing.
This dialogue took me out
The writer was legendary for this.
DIDI: If you don't want, I will go to Sophie's place.
MRS OCHE: Because of a sickler?
DIDI: Sickle cell warrior!
MRS OCHE: Heroes don't die in the battlefield.
I know I am supposed to hate Mrs Oche but she has the best lines. I love her!
The case of an ex
Didi runs into her ex-Kunle at the hospital David was admitted in and on knowing that David is SS, this sleazy shitbag weasles his way into Didi’s mother’s life.
And her mother let’s him. She even calls herself Kunle’s mother in-law.
Kunle is a creep. Didi told him “no” several times but he keeps persisting. Now he came with flowers talking about:
I was in the neighbourhood.
Asi gbuo gi, there! Liar!
David got angry about Kunle and left Didi’s place angry.
Normally I would condemn his reaction but I won’t this time around. Didi choosing to keep everything a secret was not good. She was not transparent.
ALSO!
The way she reacted when Kunle was around was suspicious. She acted like she had something to hide and she didn’t reject Kunle’s flowers.
Why is she so weak-willed with loose boundaries? How hard is it to fling the flowers in Kunle’s face?
The Second Crisis
David had a second crisis and was admitted to the hospital. Didi comes over to see him and meets Mrs Ayodele and Dami there.
So to give them privacy, Dami says to Mrs Ayodele,
Mummy, I’m hungry. Let’s go and get something to eat.
Mrs Ayodele replies with:
Yes, let’s go.
LOL
David breaks up with Didi because he wants to save her from the agony of watching him go through pain.
The Roundup
Sophie and Tega get engaged.
I really hate that we didn’t get a B-plot about them. I hate that their character were just reduced to emotional support companions rather than fleshed out people.
Mrs Oche gave Didi her blessing and chased Kunle out of their house.
Didi and Michael rekindle their relationship in the end.
