They met when she used to work at a restaurant as a waitress and he was a customer.

His date stood him up and he was feeling down. Melissa made him feel better and they became friends.

Rory wasn’t so bad. Melissa’s previous boss was abusive, fatphobic and racist. Rory told her the night they met to tell her boss to go FUCK HIMSELF.

Even though Rory is on my shitlist, he was amazing for helping Melissa with her asshole boss. Too bad their friendship devolved into an underachieving codependency.

Now we are getting a flashback to how Alex and Melissa became a thing.

Mel and Rory had a very tough conversation that led to the break up of their friendship.

Both sides were right and both were wrong. It was wrong of Mel to ask Rory to co-sign her $30,000 medical bill and it was wrong of Rory to ask Mel not to seek a promotion that would increase her pay.

They both needed to have this conversation. Walking on eggshells around each other is not friendship: it is pretence.
