This is so true. Subtle is worse because it will take you forever to find it again.

FRIEND has a beautiful voice.

Something I wanted to say. It’s like they live in an icy cave.

Since the IMDB says it is an apocalyptic film, does this mean they are in the ice age? That is the ice age happened again and killed all of humanity leaving only them.

DOCTOR is repugnant. He told FRIEND that she has a “fallen uterus” and he suspects that she is sleeping with SON.

Dude… that is so mean.

I agree.

He is pathetic and stupid.

BOY is the youngest person in the group i.e. the child of the group and they are training him, preparing him to learn to protect himself.

What I find quite sad about this is that they are preparing him for a life alone after they are gone.

They found GIRL

But they want to send her away – well, MOTHER AND DOCTOR want to. In contrast, FATHER and FRIEND don’t want to. SON on the other hand is just trying to prove that he is tough.

They didn’t send her away in the end.

This has got to be the most awkward dinner ever.

They don’t know how to act with a stranger around.  Well, except for FRIEND, she is acting normally.

MOTHER seems to be struggling mentally. GIRL asked her about her family and MOTHER snapped.

Because SON was born during the apocalypse, he is so clueless about everything and praises everything. He called a watch the most accurate timepiece ever created.

But SON responded in the most emotionally stunted way.

It’s not his fault. He is a product of his environment. There isn’t a lot of affection in the household. They love each other but it is more of tough love.

MOTHER has a mental illness.

No wonder she acts the way that she does.

So MOTHER concocted lies to make herself appear better to her son but now that GIRL is around, she feels threatened.

She thinks the girl’s presence would ruin her beautiful house of lies and it is getting ruined because SON is starting to doubt her stories.

This film is nothing like anything I have seen. It is so kooky and I LOVE IT.

It is so extra.

SON finally has a friend that he is so excited to be around.

Good for him. All these years being the only child amongst adults must have been hard for him. For the first time, he has a friend who is around the same age as him.

So, you know that thing I said about SON being excited that he made a new friend? Forget it. He wants more than friendship.

SON is in love.

But his mother doesn’t trust GIRL. She thinks GIRL is manipulating SON.

FATHER seems okay with the new development.

FRIEND loves GIRL. She is teaching her how to bake and SON is doing a fake French accent trying to be funny. FRIEND called him a moron (lovingly).

FATHER is trying to have a moment with MOTHER but she rebuffs it.

Lady, would you take that man’s compliment and bask in it for a second, please? Savour the fact that your husband loves you and called you beautiful.

MOTHER and SON are teaching GIRL how to swim.

Aww, family ties.

GIRL’s presence is making everyone happier and more introspective. MOTHER for example is now gardening.

GIRL is suffering from survivor’s guilt. She keeps feeling like she doesn’t deserve to be alive.

These two have a dirty secret.

Oh wow, FATHER is unravelling.

He isn’t as nice as he has been portraying.

I thought for a second he committed suicide.

But he didn’t.

FRIEND overdosed.

She couldn’t bear the reality of SON hating her and not forgiving her.

These two already have a kid.

When? How much time has passed?

Final Thoughts

This movie was unlike anything I have seen before so I am going to surmise what I thought happened in the end.

FRIEND was the happy medium. She kept everyone sane and grounded in reality. After she died, SON became his father (a deluded rich man filled with toxic positivity) and GIRL became like her mother-in-law (hating her appearance and having weird dreams).

MOTHER didn’t like the person GIRL became. She could see that something was different while FATHER was just happy he was a grandpappy now.

My Letterboxd rating is 3 out of 5 because the story was different and took a risk most wouldn’t.
